Adult Day Program

The Adult Day Program has operated from Saint Luke’s Homes since 1981 and remains the only regional program of its kind. It provides social/recreational programming for seniors living in the community who have limited access to such resources due to physical, cognitive or social barriers. We welcome seniors from the community who need social stimulation or to provide respite for family caregivers.  Participants can take advantage of daily activities specific to the program or take may part in some of the other the activities at Saint Luke’s.

This program provides participants with a range of recreational activities, support and social work counseling, supervised transportation (for those who qualify), education, personal care, assisted bathing, nutritious meals/snacks, laundry services and other professional services.

The program is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) with most participants attending 1-2 days depending on their identified needs and spaces available (there are 20 spaces per day).

Admission Criteria:

  • Applicants should be 65 or over
  • Applicants may be ambulatory or dependent on walking aids/wheelchair and must reside in St. John’s/metro area
  • Applicants must have social, health or family needs identified with limited access to other resources
  • Applicants care requirements must be within scope of program service delivery

Respite Day Program

This program provides participants who have moderate dementia, or impaired social functioning, with social and recreational programming.  The program offers diversional activities and promotes optimal functioning and also provides a break (respite) for family caregivers.  Participants in this program generally require more assistance and supervision than regular Adult Day Program participants and may be at risk of wandering (a secure environment is provided).

This program provides participants with a range of recreational activities, support and social work counseling, supervised transportation (for those who qualify), education, personal care, assisted bathing, nutritious meals/snacks, laundry services and other professional services.

It is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays (9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) with most participants attending both days (20 spaces per day).

Admission Criteria:

  • Applicants should be 60 or over
  • Applicants may be ambulatory or dependent on walking aids/wheelchair and must reside in St. John’s/metro area
  • Applicants must have social, health or family needs identified with limited access to other resources
  • Applicants must exhibit mild to moderate cognitive/social impairments
  • Applicants care requirements must be within scope of program service delivery
  • Family caregivers requiring short term respite from their care giving role

Additional Program Information for Adult and Respite Day Programs

There are no admission costs for these programs. However, there is a small cost for the daily meal ($7) and transportation (with staff escort) for those who qualify ($2.25 each way). Other expenses may be incurred if participants with to use the hairdressing or laundry services or attend scheduled community outings (such as a restaurant meal).

Staffing consists of a Program Coordinator/Social worker, recreational workers, a nurse (for the respite program) and a bus driver. We also use the professional services available at Saint Luke’s, e.g. referrals to physiotherapy, occupational therapy and a dietician.

Participants will receive monthly calendars outlining activities planned for each day. The recreation therapy workers develop programming suited to the population of each program, with a focus on promoting independence and optimal functioning while encouraging enjoyment and fostering friendships.

Examples of activities include community outings, fitness activities, games, crafts, socials with entertainment, trivia and reminiscing activities, bingo, cards, and more.

Referral Process for Adult and Respite Day Programs

Referrals for admission to either program, or requests for additional program information, can come from professionals or seniors/family members themselves. The Program Coordinator and Registered Nurse screen the referrals and complete the admission assessment. All participants require a medical prior to admission to either program.
